About this site

eveofdarkness.org is the development log for an open-source, modern client for Dark Age of Camelot, built in C# on the Godot engine and tested against the OpenDAoC server emulator.

This is not the original Eve of Darkness project

Eve of Darkness was a DAoC server emulator written in Elixir by Ben Falk (source: Eve-of-Darkness/eve-of-darkness). This domain was its home page; the last commit to its repository was in September 2019. We are not that project and are not affiliated with it. The domain's previous registration lapsed, and we registered it in October 2026. We kept the name out of respect for that work: its packet definitions are one of the clearest public descriptions of the DAoC login protocol, and we read them closely. We have contacted Ben and would welcome his involvement in any form.

What we're building

  • A protocol library (C#, no engine dependency) that speaks the DAoC 1.127 client protocol: login, character select, entering the world.
  • A Godot client on top of it. The first milestone is deliberately small: log in, pick a character, and stand in the world at the right coordinates.
  • Written-down findings. Packet layouts, version differences, and mistakes we made along the way, with the source code or capture that settled each one.

What we're not doing

  • Not replacing OpenDAoC, DOLSharp, or any server project. We test against them.
  • Not distributing game assets or code taken from the retail client. You need your own DAoC installation for anything that uses game data.
  • Not claiming other people's work. When we build on a project, we link it and say what we used.

Licensing

  • Client and protocol code: GPL-3.0-or-later, the same family of licenses as OpenDAoC, DOLSharp, and the other projects we learn from.
  • Posts on this site: CC BY 4.0. Quote them, translate them, and link back.
